GC1CEAE - Planten un Blomen: Tropenhaus

The tropic warmhouse in the heart of the old botanic garden "Planten un Blomen" has been build for the International Gardening Exhibition in 1962/63.

Five climatic zones can be found on an basearea of approximately 2.800mē and can be passed through by the visitors on a round tour.

The tropic warmhouse belongs to the University of Hamburg, therefore, the entry is free of charge. The warmhouse has opened throughout the year during the following hours:

March to October November to February
on weekdays 9:00am to 4:45pm 9:00am to 3:45pm
Saturday, Sunday and
on holidays
10:00am to 5:45pm 10:00am to 3:45pm

Last chance for entry is approximately 30 min. before the closing time.

To find the cache please follow the round tour that is marked by the green arrows. The roundtour is even accessible for wheelchairs or strollers.

Please answer the following questions during the round tour (Google or Wikpedia wont help you)

1. Entryhall: How many water basins for fishes do you see? This number is A.

2. Tropic-house: The "Bambusa vulgaris" has a small metal plate in its front. In the bottom right corner is a number starting with A0-G. The sum of the last 4 digits is B.

3. Cycad-house: Position yourself on the compass rose made of stones on the floor and face soutwest. You should see a sign next to a plant "Ceratozamia miqueliana" showing it's gender.
What does the sign show?
Male --> C = 1
Female --> C = 3
Hermaphrodite --> C = 5

4. Subtropics: Search for the large info board at the Feijoa and position yourself in front of it. Behind you, to your rigth, there should be small junction of two pathes, and in the corner of this junction, you'll find the Tasmanian Flax Lily. In the bottom right corner of the small metal plate is a number starting with A0-G. The sum of the last 4 digits is D.

5. Ferns: Right after the door from the subtropics, on the right side is a brown plate with the names of companies that helped restaurating this area. How many entries does this plate has? The number is E

6. Cactus house: Here you can find a large plant that looks like a giant green and yellow octopus. Standing next to the "Rainmaker", there is a smaller version of this "krakenplant" in front of the big version, with the number A0-G-6622. This small plant has three different names writen on the metal plate (a latin one, the german name and an english name). What is the starting letter of the english name? Decode the letter the common way (A=1, B=2 etc.) and you get F.
